Abstract

Abstract: Live attenuated influenza vaccine (Recombinant WRL 105 strain) or placebo was administered to 32 boys with homologous haemagglutinating inhibiting (HI) antibody titres of ⩽ 36 who were resident in a Roman Catholic Seminary. Fourfold or greater increases in antibody titre were found in 12 (75%) of 16 boys who received vaccine while there were no increases in antibody titre in the matched contact group. Vaccine virus was recovered from 8 of 16 boys who received the WRL 105 strain. During the week following vaccination the occurrence of clinical symptoms was similar in the vaccine- and placebo-treated groups.
